The end of the year is quickly approaching, and many students — and parents — are looking forward to a break from school and a chance to spend some time relaxing. While this is a great time to help your child reset and refocus, that doesn’t mean that all learning is put on hold. You can make winter break fun and educational without them even realizing it.

1. Ask them to help you plan.

Are you traveling this year? Get your kids involved. Let them figure out how long the drive will be, or the route you’re going to take. What do you need to take with you? What do you need to do before you leave? These tasks can help them with planning and organizational skills.

2. Have fun in the kitchen.

Get your kids in on the action of cooking and baking, especially if you’re having family or friends over. They can practice their math skills by measuring, doubling recipes, or deciding when to start each dish based on how long it takes to cook.

3. Play games.

Games are a great way to get their minds churning. While they’re having fun trying to win, they’re also practicing strategic planning, critical thinking, problem solving, and following directions. Whether they enjoy board games, card games, or puzzles, they are sure to sharpen their skills.

4. Discuss culture and traditions.

While you are decorating, baking, or doing other activities, talk about the history and meaning behind them. Why are they important to your family? How did different traditions start? What are some new traditions you have begun? Ask grandparents or other relatives or friends to chime in on what they did growing up.

5. Go shopping.

Are there some items you need to pick up at the store? Do you need a gift for someone? This is a wonderful opportunity to practice some financial responsibility and teach your child about budgeting. Give them a set amount of money they can spend and talk about how much things cost or what the best deal is. Let them figure out the value of discounts or coupons and how they will impact the price.

6. Explore together.

Watch a documentary. Research the answer to a question your child has. Visit a museum. Let them see your interest and initiative in learning new things. Focus on topics that your child finds interesting to get them more excited and engaged. They can explore for fun without the pressures of being graded or tested.

We are surrounded by learning opportunities every single day. It is just a matter of recognizing and taking advantage of them. If your child could use some extra support with their classes or preparing for exams, sign them up for tutoring at Crafting Scholars.
