Keeping a Positive Attitude During Uncertain Times
Life in the time of COVID-19 is filled with uncertainty. No one knows exactly what the future holds or how life as we know it will change, be it temporarily or permanently. What we do know is that we must be willing to take things one day at a time and do our best.
All of these changes can be scary and stressful for children. Their lives have been turned upside down, and they don’t know what to expect. Since they can’t see the virus, it’s hard to fully grasp what is happening. One of the best things you can do is stay positive, and help your children to do the same. We will adjust; it’s just a matter of time.
Have an Attitude of Gratitude
Try to look for the good in each day. Things may not be perfect, but there are still things to be grateful for. For example, spending more time together as a family. Reconnecting with old friends. Doing projects you have been putting off. Learning a new hobby. Enjoying the warm weather. Have your kids write down a few things each day that they are thankful for, or go around the table at dinner and share.
Stay Connected
It can be depressing not seeing family and friends. Arrange for weekly video chats so you can not only talk to one another but actually see each other too. It also gives your kids an opportunity to show off artwork or projects they’ve been working on, a new talent they’ve discovered, or anything else they want to share. Try to arrange online meetups with their friends too, outside of class video conferences for school. They could also ride bikes or go for walks around the neighborhood while keeping a safe distance but still being able to talk.
Keep a Routine
Kids like structure and consistency. Create a schedule for each day so they know what to expect and have something to look forward to. This can help minimize the stress of uncertainty surrounding school, extracurriculars, and the community. They have something else to focus on. Instead of worrying about the future, try to be present each day and appreciate whatever you’re doing.
Practice Random Acts of Kindness
Cheering up others can cheer you up too! Brainstorm with your kids some ways you can surprise others, whether it’s by leaving a friendly message in chalk on their sidewalk, mailing handwritten letters, dropping off flowers, or posting an encouraging or appreciative comment on their social media. You never know when something simple can turn someone’s day around.
Ask for Help
You don’t have to go through this pandemic alone. It’s okay to reach out to others and let them know what you need, or accept their offers for help. If your kids are struggling with their schoolwork, contact their teacher or a peer for assistance. Take advantage of resources like Crafting Scholars’ online classes so you know they’re getting the information they need and can ask questions to someone who is able to explain things clearly. If you’re running out of ideas for activities, use the plethora of resources available online and from others. Everyone is working together to make the best of things.
